Umbraco Open Source .Net community grows in UK
Orcare Director Paul Marden presents at the Umbraco UK Meetup in London.

Umbraco, the open source
Content Management System (CMS) which is based on Microsoft .Net
technology, has seen significant growth this year. With the release
of Umbraco v4 in January the software has seen around 50,000
downloads from Codeplex and another 55,000 since being added to the
Microsoft Web Platform Installer.
Alongside growth in the tool, the community within the UK has
also blossomed. An informal conference was held today in London,
targeting the 250 active members in the UK and Ireland. Hosted by
LBi in London, and
organised by Darren Ferguson from fergusonmoriyama.com,
the event was attended by 45 designers and developers, triple the
number at the last UK meetup in July 2008. Delegates attended from
as far a field as Scotland and Devon.
Darren Ferguson, who organised the event said: "The diversity of
today's attendees shows us that companies are now taking web
content management very seriously and that Umbraco is a genuine
contender for all types of organisation. To double our anticipated
number of attendees and still have people trying to sign up after
we are full is fantastic."
The event began with a keynote address from Umbraco Founder
Niels Hartvig on the technical road map for the CMS platform,
including support for Microsoft ASP.net MVC in Umbraco 5. The event
also saw presentations on with best practice guidance for beginners
from PercipientStudios.com,
as well as two case studies on end-user experience of developing
multi-lingual websites with Umbraco; Savant International by Orcare.com and Peugot.com by Wunderman.
Umbraco Founder Niels Hartvig said; "The turnout at today's UK
meet up prove how Umbraco is rapidly becoming one of the most
popular Web CMS in the UK. Not only is the turnout twice that
expected, but the complexity of the subject matter and the size of
the clients is hugely impressive."
Niels went on to say "I'm positive that Umbraco will become the
leading Web CMS on the Microsoft platform for all UK based SMEs in
2010".
As well as presentations there were plenty of practical
demonstrations of Umbraco including how to develop a simple
reusable package, as well as a session for delegates to show-off
packages they had developed.
The next Umbraco UK user group meet up is being planned in the
North of England, with another southern meet up due in 3
months.
